DAY ONE: A Thriller Showcasing Barcelona’s Technological Ecosystem to the World

Chenrui Pan,

On March 13, the series Day One premiered on Prime Video, an action thriller set in Barcelona during the week of the Mobile World Congress (MWC).

The series, produced in association with Mobile World Capital Barcelona, 3Cat and iZen, raises one of the most pressing dilemmas in our society: how far can technological progress go without losing what makes us human? This thriller intertwines technology, innovation, and digital ethics.

The story follows Ulises Albet (Álex González), a former computer prodigy who left Barcelona and the tech world after the death of his younger sister. Ten years later, a mysterious call from his former partner and best friend, Samuel Barrera (Asier Etxeandía), forces him to return during the Mobile World Congress. Samuel warns him that the world is in danger, leading Ulises to confront his past, technological advances, and the ethical limits of innovation.

Barcelona plays a central role in the narrative of Day One, going far beyond being a mere setting and presenting the city as a leading international technological hub, with cutting-edge infrastructure, scientific talent, and strong innovative capacity. The series showcases some of Barcelona’s most representative scientific and technological spaces, organically integrated into the storyline.

Among the featured locations, the 22@ district stands out. 22@ appears as a key setting of the thriller, including spaces such as the Mirador Torre Glòries and the Disseny Hub, as well as many of the district’s iconic buildings. 22@ represents the innovative heart of Barcelona, with an ecosystem that brings together startups, large companies, and research centres, clearly reflecting its nature as a technological and innovation hub.

Another highlight is the Talent Arena, promoted by Mobile World Capital Barcelona, the leading European event for developers. It serves as a meeting point where professionals, companies, and educational institutions connect in an environment focused on knowledge, opportunities, and the future of the technology sector.

The series offers a different vision of Barcelona, presenting it in a way many people are still unfamiliar with: a technological ecosystem full of vibrant, world-class talent. Rather than focusing on the city’s typical touristic image, it highlights its most innovative, technological, and scientific side. Other key locations featured include the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-CNS), the ALBA Synchrotron, and the Collserola Tower.

Day One consists of six 45-minute episodes and is directed by Marta Pahissa and Víctor Cuadrado. It features a top-tier cast including Álex González, Alba Planas, Jordi Mollà, Iván Massagué, Asier Etxeandía, Renata Notni and Mireia Oriol, among others. This thriller brings Barcelona’s technological landscape to a global audience, being released in 240 countries and dubbed into more than 24 languages. Its title, in English, already reflects its international ambition. The series has also begun airing on 3Cat since March 22.
