Hong Kong University opens its first European campus at 22@

Chenrui Pan,

Barcelona strengthens its role as a global hub for education and innovation with the arrival of the prestigious University of Hong Kong (HKU). The Asian institution has acquired a newly built property at Carrer de Llacuna, 28, which will host its first campus in Europe and its first site outside Hong Kong and mainland China.

With more than a century of history and ranked as the second-best university in Asia and the eleventh worldwide according to the QS 2025 rankings, HKU has around 40,000 students, half of whom come from abroad. Its new 22@ campus will feature flexible, sustainable spaces designed by architect Víctor Bergnes, covering 8,500 square meters and holding the LEED Gold environmental certification.

The arrival of this leading Asian university further consolidates Barcelona’s 22@ innovation district as an international hub for talent and knowledge, already home to 17 higher education institutions and numerous innovative companies.

According to Isabel Sabadí, director of 22@Network Barcelona, this development “opens new opportunities for academic and business collaboration, with a positive impact both for the district and for the entire city.”
